10 Years Later, Misunderstood DMCA is the Law That Saved the Web

Article from Wired because today is the 10th anniversary of the signing of Digital Millennium Copyright Act in the US.

The DMCA has it's knockers but the provision of safe harbour has led to explosion of blogs, video sharing and social networking sites across the internet. The way people use the internet now would not have been possible before DMCA, and Google site it as a key factor in their success. Because safe harbour also extends to search engines being able to find and display results that previously could have been considered copyright infringement.

I personally have seen the downside of the request and takedown system, where Google are not proactive in monitoring their ads creative except for profanities and some chosen big corporation brand names thus forcing its customer clients to have to actively protect their brand.
